Saxophonist Pat Mallinger has spent time performing in Los Angeles, Dallas , Boston , and Japan , before establishing Chicago as his home in 1990. He is a co-leader of Sabertooth which has been the mainstay band at the Green Mill Lounge each Saturday night for 16 years. He is also heard around town performing with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Chicago Jazz Orchestra, and Bobby Lewis Quintet. Pat has performed with  Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Harry Connick, Aretha Franklin, Cedar Walton, Marcus Roberts, Kurt Elling, Jack McDuff, Clark Terry, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell,  Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Jimmy Heath, Johnny Griffin, James Moody, Paquito D'Rivera, Von Freeman, Roy Hargrove, Lester Bowie, Terell Stafford, Charles Earland Band, and Woody Herman Orchestra.</p>

Saxophonist Scott Burns' performance credits include Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Kenny Werner, Louis Bellson and Nicholas Payton, and received an outstanding soloist award from Down Beat magazine in 1999.  As an established member of the local jazz scene, Scott frequently shares the stage with veteran Chicago jazz musicians including Jodie Christian, Bobby Broom, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Scott has toured nationally, playing select dates with legendary singer Harry Connick Jr., as well as with the Mighty Blue Kings.</p>

Saxophonist John Wojciechowski has performed or recorded with The Chicago Jazz Orchestra, The Chicago Jazz Ensemble, The Woody Herman Orchestra, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Detroit Symphony Orchesta, Clark Terry, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Charlie Haden, Kurt Elling, and Kenny Burrell. John was also a finalist in the 1996 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. </p>

Trombonist Tom Garling has played with such greats as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and Randy Brecker. He joined Maynard Fergusons Big Bop Nouveau Band, and toured with Maynard as Musical Director and Trombonist for six years. Tom currently resides in the Chicago area, and is highly sought after around the world as a recording artist, composer and arranger, teacher, clinician and professional musician.</p>

Trombonist Joel Adams won the International Trombone Association Frank Rosolino Memorial Scholarship in 1986. He toured with the Woody Herman Orchestra performing with Clark Terry, Joe Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, and Diane Schuur. He has also played with Rich Perry and the Gary Morgan Latin Big Band while living in New York City . Locally, he has performed with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble with Jon Faddis, Doug Lawrence, Jimmy Heath, Arturo Sandoval and Clyde Stubblefield as well as his own groups.</p>

He currently co-leads the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble with piano phenom Darwin Noguera.</p>

Dan holds the piano chair in the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and has performed as a sideman with Aretha Franklin, Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Roy Hargrove, Jeff Hamilton, Kurt Elling, Joe Williams, Jimmy Heath, and Doug Lawrence. Dan resides and performs in the Chicago area and has toured and performed throughout the world.</p>

Clark has toured and performed extensively throughout the world with Cedar Walton, Kurt Elling, Kevin Mahogany, Peter Bernstein, Von Freeman, Bobby Broom, Michael Weiss, The Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Charlie Haden Liberation Orchestra, and the Joe La Barbara Sextet. From 1997 to 1999 Clark performed and toured with Sony Recording Artists The Mighty Blue Kings. He has also performed at international jazz festivals in the US, Ireland, France and Canada, sharing bills with Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, B.B. King, Dr. John, The Staples Singers, Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy.</p>

<p>As a freelance musician, Chicago native Dave Schumacher has been active on the New York scene for more than the 25 years. As member of Lionel Hampton's Orchestra from 1983 to 1987 he toured the Americas and Europe. He again toured with Hamp in 1988 and 1989. A highlight in Dave's career was traveling with the Art Blakey Big Band to Japan in 1987 to perform at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival. </p>

<p>Dave is an original member of Harry Connick, Jr.'s Orchestra (19 years), from its beginnings in 1990 to it's recent break-up in 2009. He has thrilled audiences touring with Harry in North America, Europe, Asia (Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, South Korea) and Australia. His baritone sax can be heard on each of these Harry Connick, Jr., Columbia recordings: Oh My NOLA, Chanson du Vieux Carre, Only You, When My Heart Finds Christmas, Come By Me, Blue Light Red Light, Songs I Heard, Thou Shalt Not, What A Night and others. </p>

<p>As a freelance artist Dave was a touring member of the T.S. Monk On Monk Ensemble from 1999 to 2000 touring the U.S. and Europe, as well as touring Europe with the Tom Harrell Octet in 2000. Dave has also done freelance work with Nicholas Payton's Louis Armstrong Tribute Big Band, Joe Lovano's 52nd Street Themes Nonet. the groups of Jack McDuff, Eddie Gladden, Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Chico O'Farrill's Afro-Cuban Big Band, Lin Halliday and many others. </p>

<p>Dave has recorded as a sideman with Lionel Hampton, Harry Connick, Jr., Tom Harrell, Scott Whitfield, Jason Lindner, Mel Torme, Ben Wolfe and salsero Billy Carrion among others. </p>

At Rutgers (Livingston College), Dave met Paul Jeffrey , who was to become a major mentor in his life. Dave studied saxophone, arranging and music copying with Paul. Shortly after Dave's graduation from Rutgers, Mr. Jeffrey recommended him to the legendary Lionel Hampton. As a result of this meeting, Dave was hired to become a member of Mr. Hampton's Orchestra - Dave's first gig with a major jazz artist. Also while at Rutgers Dave studied with jazz greats Kenny Barron (Keyboard and Harmony), Ted Dunbar (Improvisation) and Larry Ridley. </p>

<p>At NJCU as a Jazz Performance MM student Dave also focused on woodwind doubling and the art of the adjustment and refinement of single woodwind reeds with Dr. Edward Joffee. Joffee also supervisd Dave's Masters Thesis -"Gene Ammons, The Quintessential Chicago Tenor Player". Dave's longtime in-depth self study of jazz history was also extended in his research projects (jazz history, style and analysis) on saxophonists Don Byas, Arnett Cobb, Sonny Stitt and John Gilmore under the supervision of noted jazz artist and historian Bill Kirchner. </p>

<p>As a composer, Dave's "Al's Rose", was recorded by trombonist Al Grey on his album, The New Al Grey Quintet on Chiaroscuro Records. David's original music and arrange-ments were also played by the Lionel Hampton Big Band on tour around the world. </p>

<p>Dave's arrangements of six compositions (including Sidney Bechet's "Si Tu Vois Ma Mere", Danny Barker's "Tootie Ma" and classic standards "Stumbling" and "Home") are featured on New Orleans master trombonist Lucien Barbarin's 2007 CD - It's Good To Be Home. Many of Dave's compositions are published by Second Floor Music, BMI, New York including a beautiful ballad entitled "On Every Corner" with lyrics penned by vocalist Nnenna Freelon. </p>

<p>As an educator David has maintained a private saxophone studio for more than 20 years teaching saxophone, jazz improvisation, ear training and jazz theory to many young musicians. </p>

<p>As a music copyist (music calligrapher) and engraver (using Score, Sibelius and Finale software), David has had among his clients: Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Abbey Lincoln, Tom Harrell, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band (copying for Jim McNeely, Frank Foster, Slide Hampton), Cedar Walton, Sonny Rollins, Second Floor Music, Boosey and Hawkes and Subito </p>

<p>Mr. Schumacher has three albums as a leader to his credit: Every Corner, Amosaya Records AM-2525-CD, From Another Life, Amosaya Records AM-2528-CD and his newest release Endangered Species, Summit Records DCD 438. </p>

<p>Dave is currently active in the Chicago area as well as his continued performances on the New York freelance scene, working on his new album, and touring with Tenor Saxophonist Jerry Weldon. </p>]]>

<p>Native Los Angeleno Azar Lawrence grew up during an era of Jazz history that will forever transcend time. Whether Coltranesque or Milestone, having composed, produced, and playing with Jazz legends, such as McCoy Tyner for over 5 years, and Elvin Jones for several years; Azar went to Jazz Master's School at an early age. Azar was honored in his late teens to be thrust upon the jazz scene in a major way, producing and performing for decades with musicians on the cusp of the vanguard, whether it was the late great Frank Zappa or wailing on the sax in a rap video with Busta Rhymes. His performance with Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall where Dark Magus was recorded live is hailed to this day and noted in Mile's autobiography.</p>

<p>Azar Lawrence led a musical childhood and began playing drums at the age of three and moved on to violin and piano at the age of five, under the direction of his mother Ima Lawrence. Ima, a gifted musician and teacher from whom Azar received his acute flair for all things music has shaped many successful musicians. Azar began playing with the USC JR Orchestra at the age of five. He played violin until the age of eight, and performed vocals accompanied by his mother during elementary school where she taught sixth grade and music. At age eleven he began hearing a different musical voice. He was an accomplished pianist, violinist and vocalist in his own right at the time. He wanted to take up Viola, but something happened, Lonnie a long time friend of the Lawrence family, who often brought his flute when he visited, came by for a swim, and brought his alto sax Azar was not poolside but he had to see who was playing that cool sound. His father his biggest supporter and fan who had bought all of Azar's instruments purchased him an alto sax, and Azar began taking instruction from Mr. Schumaker once a week.</p>

<p>In high school Azar played with the Dorsey High Jazz Band, and played a jazz workshop with Herbert Baker, one of the greatest pianist that ever lived and I feel blessed to have been in his presence Azar played everyday with Herbert Baker until a tragic car accident took his teacher and s life, during his senior year in high school. That event made me reach deeper and I knew I had to carry on what I had learned. Drummer, Reggie Golson, introduced Azar to the music, and that's when he began to get into the creation. Nightly he went to Reggie's house. Reggie had a room full of records, and he would play them all, over time. Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Shorter. Reggie prepared me.</p>

<p>After high school at the age of 19, Azar played with Candy Finch, Larry Gales, and Woody Shaw at a regular gig at a club on 54th St. in Los Angeles. Soon he would perform with Ike & Tina Turner, Watts 103rd St. Band, and War. He then joined Elvin Jones for two years and after leaving Elvin, he joined McCoy Tyner's group for five years and then back to Elvin for a year, and in the meantime recorded with Roberta Flack. Miles Davis used to come and hear me when I played with McCoy Tyner in New York, as well as when I was with Elvin.<br />
Miles approached Azar about joining his group, and he wasn't ready to commit.</p>

<p>Azar's first performance with Miles was in DC and then they performed in New York at Carnegie Hall where Dark Magus was recorded.</p>

<p>Azar Lawrence's history has been impressive since the age of five, throughout his musical sojourn he's played sax alongside names like Woody Shaw, Horace Tapscott, Ron Carter, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Henry Butler and Buddy Collette.</p>

<p>When Azar is in Los Angeles he is an resident artist at The World Stage, also known as the house of Billy Higgins who he recorded and performed many times with the great until his death. He is a member of The World Stage Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, which was under the direction of the great Horace Tapscott until his death in the late nineties. Being successful at such a young age can have drawbacks.  His musical career was meteoric to say the least. He had performed on six continents before the age of 21. You could say my life was fast and furious I had forgotten what I was taught, by my great teachers, my mother being the first. Music is your voice, keep it pure, share your gift not for the fame or fortune, but for the creator, it was given to you by him at no cost. If you make a living from your gift, it's just gravy. If hadn't run out of it, (manna) I would have died.</p>

<p>Playing for his mind, body and soul, and for healing of the self, as well as that of others, Azar is taking his sound into new directions, to a celestial plane these days. To lift one's self, explains Azar, all aspects of his being, his spirit, has to be clear and focused. While Azar was discovering himself, his journey led him to seriously study Coltrane. He needed a mystical connection to the saxophone. Coltrane takes one to another realm and he needed healing.  He had been out of balance and in a musical wilderness, commercially successful, bus spiritually and physically killing himself in the process. I'm humbled and blessed, to be alive to carry out what I've learned from my contemporaries, but mostly my elders. Greats like Higgins, and Tapscott, and Ima who did not do it for the fame and fortune, but because of the music voice that summons us.</p>]]>

<p>Donald Vega's style and virtuosity on piano, along with his composing and arranging, mark this young artist as a unique and exciting presence in the world of jazz.  His sound has been said to resonate with a touch of Oscar Peterson's versatility and Bill Evans' elegant lyricism.</p>

<p>Vega's first album as a leader, Tomorrows, was released July 2008 with rave reviews, featuring Lewis Nash on drums and David J. Grossman on bass.Tomorrows includes six original tunes, showing us that Vega has evolved into both a creative composer and arranger. Tomorrows adds to a growing discography with Vega's piano playing including Anthony Wilson's "The Power of Nine", Bennie Wallace's" Disorder at the Border", Jose Rizo's band "Jazz on the Latin Side's The Last Bull Fighter", and Al McKibbon's "Black Orchid", to name just a few.</p>

<p>Vega's recent competitive winnings include Down Beat's 2007 Jazz Student Soloist award and 1st place at the 2008 Philips Jazz Piano Competition at the University of West Florida. His composition, "Wailing Jane" was featured in JAZZIZ's October 2008 Education edition. </p>

<p>Donald currently resides in New York where he recently completed his studies at the Juilliard School with piano great, Kenny Barron. He frequently performs throughout Europe and Latin America. <p>Pat Mallinger was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he began playing the saxophone at the age of 11. He received his Jazz Studies degree in 1986 from North Texas State University where he was awarded the One O'clock Lab Band Scholarship. He performed while residing in Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, and Japan, before establishing Chicago as his home in 1990. He is a co-leader of Sabertooth which has been the mainstay band at the Green Mill Lounge each Saturday night for 17 years. </p>

<p>He is also heard around town performing with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Bobby Lewis Quintet, and the Pat Mallinger Quartet to name a few. Pat performs concerts and festivals nationally and internationally both as a band leader and side man. As an original member of the Ravinia Jazz Mentor program, founded by Ramsey Lewis, Pat has mentored the underserved inner city youth through jazz performance and clinics in Chicago Public High Schools for fifteen years. </p>

<p>He also teaches for Columbia College in a similar capacity as a Jazz Mentor at Burley Elementary in a program created by Jon Faddis entitled Louis Armstrong Legacy Project and Celebration. Pat also teaches privately to students enrolled at the American Conservatory of Music. Additionally, he is the director of the Concert Jazz Band at Merit School of Music iｎChicago. </p>

<p>パット・マリンガーは生まれ育ったミネソータ州セントポール市で、サクソフォンを１１歳で始めた。1986年にはジャズスタディーズ専攻でノーステキサス大学をOne O'clock Lab Band奨学金を使用して卒業。ロスアンゼルス、ダラス、ボストン、日本を経て、1990年にはパフォーマンスの拠点をシカゴに置いた。１７年間グリーンミルラウンジの土曜日のメインステージを勤めるSabertoothの共同リーダーである。シカゴジャズアンサンブル、ボビールイスクインテット、パット・マリンガーカルテットを始めとしたグループへの参加をシカゴで行っている。マリンガーはコンサートやフェスティバルでバンドリーダーとサイドマン両方として活躍している。<br />

<p>Kahil El'Azbar's Ritual Trioのシカゴでのライブ音源。同トリオの前作Africa N'da Bluesと同じくPharoah Sandersがフィーチャーされておりいやがおうにも期待が膨らむ。トリオの枯葉からステージは始まる。Malachi Favorsの強力なベースの上でAri Brownは叙情的にピアノソロを紡いでいく。サックスプレイヤーでもあるAri Brownのプレイはメロディックでスピリチュアルだ。いつしか観客とともにその世界に引き込まれてしまう。2曲目（曲名）から登場するファラオはそんなバンドをバックに水を得た魚の如くふきまくる。まるでコルトレーンが乗り移ったかのようで圧巻のプレイ。ラストのブルースでは踊って歌ってのご機嫌なファラオが目に見えるようで微笑ましくなる。ついにはレジェンドを前に封印していたであろうAri Brownのサックスまで飛び出しステージと観客は一体になり盛り上がる。まさにライブの醍醐味が凝縮された一枚である。ファラオの名盤「Live」同様、本作も日の目をみたことで、いつしか伝説のライブと言われる日がくるかもしれない。</p>

<p>A young lion with a roar being heard in several music genres; Corey Wilkes burst onto the music scene in 2002 and landed in the soul of the Chicago Jazz Club scene. </p>

<p>For his next feat he took on the ghost of Lester Bowie and filled the vacant trumpet seat in the the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Big shoes to fill for a new musician but Corey isn't an ordinary musician. He began at the age of 10, made the Illinois All State Honors Jazz Combo in high school and honed his talent at Berklee College of Music.</p>

<p>His soulful notes can be heard gracing a variety of projects such as DJ sets by Logic, Osunlade and Josh Deep; tracks on Hidden Beach's Unwrapped Vol 4, as well as Kahil El Zabar's Ascension Loft Series.</p>

<p>Corey has shared the stage and knowledge with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Ledisi, Soulive, James Moody, Meshell Ndegeocello, Mike Phillips, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Fred Anderson, Will Calhoun, Malcom Jamal-Warner and so many more. In addtion he performs extensively in Europe as well as Africa and South America.</p>

<p>Holding down posts as an Artist in Residence and Board Member with the Jazz Institute of Chicago and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians; this young lion has got a roar to listen for.</p>

<p>Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, Sanders' sound can be as raw and abrasive as it is possible for a saxophonist to produce. Yet, Sanders is highly regarded to the point of reverence by a great many jazz fans. Although he made his name with expressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz in John Coltrane's late ensembles of the mid-'60s, Sanders' later music is guided by more graceful concerns. </p>

<p>The hallmarks of Sanders' playing at that time were naked aggression and unrestrained passion. In the yearsafter Coltrane's death, however, Sanders explored other, somewhat gentler and perhaps more cerebral avenues -- without, it should be added, sacrificing any of the intensity that defined his work as an apprentice to Coltrane.</p>

<p>Pharoah Sanders (his given name, Ferrell Sanders) was born into a musical family. Sanders' first instrument was the clarinet, but he switched to tenor sax as a high school student, under the influence of his band director, Jimmy Cannon. Cannon also exposed Sanders to jazz for the first time. Sanders' early favorites included Harold Land, James Moody, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane. As a teenager, he played blues gigs for ten and 15 dollars a night around Little Rock, backing such blues greats as Bobby "Blue" Bland and Junior Parker. After high school, Sanders moved to Oakland, CA, where he lived with relatives. He attended Oakland Junior College, studying art and music. Known in the San Francisco Bay Area as "Little Rock," Sanders soon began playing bebop, rhythm & blues, and free jazz with many of the region's finest musicians, including fellow saxophonists Dewey Redman and Sonny Simmons, as well as pianist Ed Kelly and drummer Smiley Winters. In 1961, Sanders moved to New York, where he struggled. Unable to make a living with his music, Sanders took to pawning his horn, working non-musical jobs, and sometimes sleeping on the subway. During this period he played with a number of free jazz luminaries, including Sun Ra, Don Cherry, and Billy Higgins. Sanders formed his first group in 1963, with pianist John Hicks (with whom he would continue to play off-and-on into the '90s), bassist Wilbur Ware, and drummer Higgins. The group played an engagement at New York's Village Gate. A member of the audience was John Coltrane, who apparently liked what he heard. In late 1964, Coltrane asked Sanders to sit in with his band. By the next year, Sanders was playing regularly with the Coltrane group, although he was never made an official member of the band. Coltrane's ensembles with Sanders were some of the most controversial in the history of jazz. Their music, as represented by the group's recordings -- Om, Live at the Village Vanguard Again, and Live in Seattle among them -- represents a near total desertion of traditional jazz concepts, like swing and functional harmony, in favor of a teeming, irregularly structured, organic mixture of sound for sound's sake. Strength was a necessity in that band, and as Coltrane realized, Sanders had it in abundance.<br />

Sanders made his first record as a leader in 1964 for the ESP label. After John Coltrane's death in 1967, Sanders worked briefly with his widow, Alice Coltrane. From the late '60s, he worked primarily as a leader of his own ensembles. From 1966-1971, Sanders released several albums on Impulse, including Tauhid (1966), Karma (1969), Black Unity (1971), and Thembi (1971). In the mid-'70s, Sanders recorded his most commercial effort, Love Will Find a Way (Arista, 1977); it turned out to be a brief detour. From the late '70s until 1987, he recorded for the small independent label Theresa. From 1987, Sanders recorded for the Evidence and Timeless labels. The former bought Theresa records in 1991 and subsequently re-released Sanders' output for that company. In 1995, Sanders made his first major-label album in many years, Message From Home (produced by Bill Laswell for Verve). The two followed that one up in 1999 with Save Our Children. In 2000, Sanders released Spirits -- a multi-ethnic live suite with Hamid Drake and Adam Rudolph. In the decades after his first recordings with Coltrane, Sanders developed into a more well-rounded artist, capable of playing convincingly in a variety of contexts, from free to mainstream. Some of his best work is his most accessible. As a mature artist, Sanders discovered a hard-edged lyricism that has served him well. </p>

<p>ビリー・バングは、プレイヤーとして、バンド・リーダーとして、コンポーザーとして、作曲家として、現在のジャズ表現の最先端に位置する、最も注目されるアーチストの一人です。</p>

<p>1947年9月20日、米国アラバマ生まれ。ニューヨーク市のハーレムに移り、中学の時にバイオリンを手にし、マサチューセッツ大学進学予備校に通う傍ら、音楽活動を開始。18歳の時に合衆国陸軍に徴兵され、ベトナム戦争に従軍。戦争から戻ると政治的にアクティブになり、反戦活動に従事。</p>

<p>The violin is hardly the first instrument that comes to mind when you think about jazz, but that's never daunted Billy Bang, one of the instrument's most adventurous exponents.</p>

<p>Over the past 26 years Bang's hard-edged tone, soulful sense of traditional swing and evocatively expressive style has enhanced over two dozen albums by top names in a variety of genres, from the blistering funk of Bootsy Collins and the harmolodic groove of Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society to the intergalactic uproar of Sun Ra.</p>

<p>With more than 15 albums under his own leadership, nearly a dozen more in co-led endeavors, and five more with the String Trio of New York (which he co-founded in 1977 with guitarist James Emery and bassist John Lindberg), Billy Bang is one of the more prolific and original members of the progressive scene.</p>

<p>Born William Vincent Walker in Mobile, Alabama in 1947, his family moved to New York City's Harlem while he was still an infant. In junior high school he was nicknamed Billy Bang after a cartoon character, and over his initial protests, it stuck. Around the same time, his primary interest turned to music, and he took up the violin, switching to percussion in the early '60s when he became captivated by Afro-Cuban rhythms.</p>

<p>While attending a Massachusetts prep school under full scholarship, he met and began playing with fellow-student, folk-singer Arlo Guthrie. Drafted into the army following graduation, Bang was sent to Vietnam, an experience that profoundly affected his life, often quite painfully. Returning home and radicalized, Billy became active in the anti-war movement, and by the late '60s had returned to music.</p>

<p>Heavily inspired by the exploratory fire of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and the liberating energy of the free-jazz movement, Bang returned to the violin as his principal means of expression. Attending New York's Queens College, and studying privately with renowned violinist Leroy Jenkins, Bang became a key member of the dynamic New York avant-garde scene of the '70s.</p>

<p>Forming his own group, The Survival Ensemble, and working with artists like David Murray, Frank Lowe, William Parker and the legendary Sam Rivers, Billy began to reach an international audience in 1977 with the String Trio, remaining with the cooperative ensemble for nine years.</p>

<p>During these same years he continued to tour and record with his own ensembles, as well as genre-busting ensembles like The Decoding Society and Bill Laswell's Material (alongside guitar giant Sonny Sharrock). He even briefly led his own funk-oriented band, Forbidden Planet, and in 1981 taught at the University of Nebraska.</p>

<p>He continued to work and collaborate with notables like Murray, Don Cherry and James 'Blood ' Ulmer, and in 1982 began a ten-year association with the incomparable Sun Ra, concluding with a 1992 quartet recording for Soul Note, "A Tribute to Stuff Smith," dedicated to the father of the jazz violin.</p>

<p>In 1990, Bang formed the Solomonic Quartet with trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah, and continued to freelance and lead his own groups.</p>

<p>Relocating to Berlin in 1996 where he lived until 2000, Bang criss-crossed the Atlantic frequently, performing all over Europe and doing five tours through the South and Midwest with percussionist Abbey Rader, three of which included tenorman Frank Lowe.</p>

<p>He also began a regular working relationship with percussionist Kahil El'Zabar in 1996, performing in duet, and sometimes as a trio with esteemed Art Ensemble of Chicago co-founder and bassist Malachi Favors Maghostut. </p>

<p>Currently, Bang records for Canada's Justin Time Records, for which he recorded "Bang On" in 1997 and "The Big Bang Theory" in 1999. His latest CD (released in October 2001) entitled "Vietnam: The Aftermath" evokes and confronts the memories of his Vietnam experiences and showcases the fine compositional skills that have always marked his own recordings.</p>

<p>Returning to New York in 2000, Bang has continued his busy schedule, touring Europe in the Fall of 2001 with David Murray, continuing a musical interaction that has lasted over 25 years with a series of concerts and a collaborative dance work in Birmingham, England.</p>

<p>He also tours Europe in November 2001 and the U.S. in January 2002 in duet with El'Zabar; and performs in England with the fusion ensemble Sonicphonics, with whom he's worked since 1998.</p>

<p>A dazzling improviser, excellent composer, and provocative leader, Billy Bang remains on the cutting-edge of jazz expression.</p>

<p>The fusion of world rhythms and straight-ahead jazz make this passionate performer an audience favorite all over the world. Benito Gonzalez is being recognized as an exciting pianistand composer for his well-received debut album, "Starting Point" (Christian McBride, Antonio Sanchez, Rene McLean, Ron Blake) and as winner of the 2005 Great American Jazz Piano Competition.<br />
Presently, Benito is creating a very personal body of work for his sophomore album as a leader that will feature him as an improviser. After two years touring with jazz master, Kenny Garrett, he added numerous festivals and international jazz club dates to his credit. Benito has shared the stage with Curtis Fuller, Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Hutcherson, Christian McBride, Ignacio Berroa, Roy Hargrove, Rene McLean, Steve Turre, Hamiet Bluiett, Antonio Sanchez, T.K. Blue, Nicholas Payton and Jackie Mclean.<br />
His multi-cultural talents have led to frequent recording dates; from American jazz masters to West African musicians to Latin bands. He has also served as musical director for several Venezuelan recording artists.<br />
The Benito Gonzalez Trio has appeared at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland and the Jacksonville Jazz Festival in addition to many other noted jazz venues.</p>
